One of My Favourite Tells

2 min read

I’m not in this hand, but it’s the final table of the weekly LC league tournament.

Tony raises in middle position and is called by Briony (I think). Flop Ace, x, x Tony bets the pot, about 30% of his stack. At this point Tomek the barman comes by, asking if anyone wants a drink. Tony is first in line ordering a pint, thus committing him to another half hour. Is Tony strong do we think? :) Briony folds.

This was a very disappointing evening for me. I busted 8th for zero points and lost £200 playing very low-stake NLHE / PLO. A few interesting hands:

Tournament Hand 1:

I have built up to 6.5k from 3500 and limp UTG with AA. I often make this play anyway, but Tom and Fluke are short stacked and have itchy trigger fingers. Sure enough, Tom pushes with 10 9o. This actually plays ok against As, and I have to fade a ton of outs on the river.

Tournament Hand 2:

I am in the BB for 400 and it’s folded round to Tony on the button who raises to 1600. His range is huge here and when I find Js it’s an insta-push for 5k…but Tony has Qs and I’m done. Not sure this can be played differently - if the button has it, the button has it.

Omaha Hand 1:

I hold 6,7,8,9 ds in a small buy-in game and call a raise. 3 of us go to the flop:

Flop: 6, 10, K. Some small betting - still 3 of us in action
Turn 6. A bet and a raise so I push for my last £30 with trip 6s and straight draw. It’s called by both players, and I am a distant third to full houses. My play is really bad here. I spoke to Fluke after this hand - basically once the board pairs my straight draws pretty much mean nothing, and since I only have the bare six it is pretty likely I am going to be behind to at least one full house.

Omaha Hand 2:

I call a raise with K K 8 8.
Flop is J, 6, 6. Checked around

Turn: Ace. Checked around

River: The “golden” King. Betting explodes however and all three of us end up all in. It’s As full v Kings full v Jacks full (!) and Tom rakes down the pot. No getting away from that especially with our short stacks. If I was being asked to call £500 it may have been different.
