Decent Omaha Session

1 min read

I put in a solid 5 hours at the Omaha tables on Sunday afternoon, resulting in a welcome $850 profit. I three tabled the $1/£2, and after a brisk start never looked like losing. On two of my tables I built up stacks of about $900, whilst the other table seemed to be my “reload” table and constantly hovered between $300 and zero.

After a conservative start I played more aggressively than normal, with a far wider starting hand selection. Against the big stacks, I played about 70% of holdings when in position, and just picked my spots against the small stacks, which seemed to work well.

I saw my fair share of crazy plays from opponents. I’m not one to peddle the nuts in Omaha, and lead at a fair proportion of pots, a tendancy which good opponents will pick up on. However, even that shouldn’t explain two separate opponents getting $150 plus in on the turn drawing stone dead, with straights on flush laden, paired boards.

I tried to use my loose image to get paid off on some monsters, but failed miserably. In two CONSECUTIVE hands I flopped quad kings, and then my somewhat speculative hole cards of 7642 morphed into the nuts on a 772 board. I led for the pot both times in a four way pot and got all folds. Meh.

I really should have won more in this session - thrice I fell for my standard Omaha leak. Note to Jimbo: When you have the nut straight on the turn and an opponent flat calls a pot bet, and then leads on the river for less than the pot after the board pairs or flushes they ALWAYS have it.

This week sees a tournament on Thursday, before the London Pub Poker Open on Saturday at Loose Cannon. It’s only a £25 buy in, but offers the chance to play in a bigger field than usual. I won’t be able to turn up till 45 minutes after the start, so hopefully my stack won’t be too badly hit.
